Umur Yenal, Ph.D., CRP, HBM Prenscia
Dr. Umur Yenal is a Technologist/Engineering Consultant at HBM Prenscia. He is involved in the delivery of training courses in the fields of reliability and quality engineering, as well as the development of ReliaSoft software products. He also plays a significant role in the HBM Prenscia consulting team and has been involved in various projects across different industries, including oil & gas, power generation, automotive, semiconductor, defense and aerospace. He holds a BSc degree from the Middle East Technical University, MSc degree from the Technical University of Denmark, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Arizona. Before joining HBM Prenscia, he worked as a post-doctorate research associate and as a test manager at the University of Arizona. His areas of interest include design for reliability, life data analysis, accelerated life testing, reliability growth analysis, and system reliability and maintainability analysis and optimization.
In the global economy that we live in, companies face three unprecedented challanges to become successful worldwide. First, they need to reduce the total life-cycle cost of their products, which include not only the design and production costs but also the post-shipment costs, such as maintenance costs, liability costs, lost market share costs, etc. An optimum reliability should be determined and implemented to minimize such total life-cycle cost. Second, they need to achieve faster development times to compete with their global competitors. Releasing a new version of a product frequently in the global market is becoming a standard today. Therefore, delays in the products’ time-to-market is unacceptable regardless of the reason. And third, companies need to satisfy high customer expactations for products’ and processes’ reliability and quality. No matter the cost, reliability of a product is always a given. Customers demand reliability in every product they purchase.
An effective reliability program is essential for a company to meet these objectives. Companies need to design the reliability into their products and processes using the best available science-based methods. They need not only to know how to calculate reliability, but also to set a realistic reliability target and to achieve that goal. Therefore, it is esssential to establish and execute effective reliability processes and methods that focus on failure prevention, in a cost-effective way with shorter product development times. This process must begin early in the design stage and be well integrated into the overall product development cycle. This talk aims to provide an overview of the benefits of establishing such a reliability program for the companies and organizations in Turkey while comparing this scenario to other global applications.

At the highest level, the purpose of a reliability engineering program is to quantify, test, analyze, and report on the reliability of the organization's products. This information is then used to assess the financial impact of the reliability of the products, and to improve the overall product reliability and consequently the financial strength of the organization. A well-structured, systematic, streamlined, and concurrent Design for Reliability (DFR) process is key to achieve this goal.
During this workshop, we will target to provide the attendees with an overview of the basics and knowledge of the process, methods, and tools available to achieve high reliability in product design. Design for Reliability and Safety

Reliability and safety are two important vital factors of contemporary product development cycle. Naturally, the concept called as maintainability, which in general, consists of preventive maintenance and repair activities, is an integral part of the overall process. Those factors should be handled with high priority, starting from the first stages of product development cycle. Especially the concept of reliability, although most of the time it is confused with the concepts of quality, forms one of the most important criteria of design. In this presentation basic concepts about reliability, safety and maintainability will be introduced, related design and analysis tools will be mentioned and the techniques of applying those concepts to a “Successful Product Development Process” will be introduced. Finally some sample cases will be analyzed with the intent of reaching some lessons learned and conclusions, which will give guidelines for designers. Throughout the presentation, my experience with the course “ME 582 Fundamentals of Design for Reliability”, which I have taught at the Bilkent University - Mechanical Engineering Department since 2012, will be shared also.
Reliability Growth Test (RGT) Process

In this presentation we will explain the basic concepts of reliability and the reliability growth process. We will also discuss the relationship between FRACAS and the reliability growth text (RGT) process. Then we will share studies on the RGT and the experiences gained in TEI. Finally, we will explain what the RGT outputs are and how they should be interpreted.
Specialty Engineering Applications For System Development

This presentation introduces the basics of theoretical and practical background on specialty engineering activities implemented throughout the system development phase. The specialty engineering activities mainly focus on reliability, availability, testability and safety specialties. These activities initiate the concept of the products design stage and last until the end of the production stage. The main aim of specialty engineering activities is to deliver products so that customer requirements and system specifications are achieved within the cost constraints.
Application Examples of FMECA and FRACAS Processes

In this presentation we will explain the obstacles encountered during the construction of FMECA and FRACAS processes within TEI and the functioning of the established processes and their contribution to the design activities. We will also mention which issues need to be considered for the safety and reliability of the designed product and for making the risks known. Finally, we will present our approach to trade between safety and reliability.
